[Rin is content to watch Makoto in this moment, but -- is instead pulled into it (it's one of the things Makoto doesn't realise he does all the time, and it's also one of the things Makoto does that makes Rin feel so loved). a soft smile playing on his lips, Rin's fingers twine with Makoto's -- sometimes, and for all the freedom he needs, he feels inseparable from this boy at his side]

[a sun-spotted grin, guilty and amused, is flashed at Makoto]

I couldn't really help myself. There's just something about swimming in the ocean, right? And we haven't gotten to do it in ages...

[he's led to the water easily, and the salt and sand over his feet and ankles feels a lot like home (as does the press close of Makoto's palm)]

Swim with me today?

[it's a question, because Rin doesn't have a short memory; he recalls Makoto frightened by the lake, and the training session gone terribly wrong]

I know I said to be careful, but...

[he probably doesn't have to finish what he's thinking. it's clear, from the blue in makoto's eyes, that no matter how he felt, everything seems so small in comparison to the ocean before them. how often have they gotten a chance like this?]

[the water is colder than he remembers, but it leaves him warm, regardless.]

[makoto looks up at rin and keeps his gaze for a moment--and then he looks away, taking his hand back and removing his bag from his back, putting it down on sand the tide doesn't yet reach; he's pulling at his shirt now.]

Just for a bit, but-- [and over his head, a wrinkle on his face, ruffled hair] Suncream first, okay?

Fine, fine.

[there's a crack somewhere here to be made, about maidenly skin and mother hens, but Rin can't seems to focus on much apart from the immediate sensory experiences coming on in. the prick of salt at the corners of his eyes feels good, the roughness of the sand, the way sun looks on Makoto's bared shoulders, at this point deeply freckled from all the days swimming together in various pools. Rin follows Makoto out as if he's still being led by the hand (it doesn't always take physical contact, to make a tether to Rin -- four long years in Australia should prove that), and tugs his bag a little farther up the beach. he's not sure about the tides here, he doesn't want Makoto's stuff to get swept away]

[he digs in Makoto's bag, finding the bottles of water, the sunscreen. he grins as he finds it, waggling the bottle at his boyfriend]

Are you gonna be too embarrassed to let me put it on you today? It's a special occasion, oi -- !

[makoto doesn't protest this time (who is following who?), going after rin and deciding to have a seat right then and there on the sand. makoto takes a towel from his bag and places it down on the sand to sit on, feet digging into the hot sand and toes wiggling at the sensation.]

Go ahead.

[arms over his knees, makoto is looking out at the ocean, a smile on his face.]

[it really is a special occasion.]

[when folds down to sit crosslegged behind his boyfriend, Rin's ankles press to the other's backside, and as he pops off the lid to the sunblock, he dashes a kiss to Makoto's (freckled) shoulders. there's something terribly intimate about such careless gestures -- the sea always seems to make Rin tip his hand too quickly (though these cards, Makoto's likely anticipated; Rin's affection for him is maybe, scarily, more boundless than the waves ahead)]

[the cream is rubbed on by way of a light and easy massage, Rin taking both care and his time. as much as he's dying to jump in the water with Makoto, this moment is special, too. the smile on Makoto's face tells him as much]

I'm glad you came right away. It'll start getting noisy later on, I bet.

[because for now, this is kind of perfect; just the sound of the waves, and the company of one another]

[makoto's trying to pinpoint the reason why something like this feels more than just a memory from home, happier than the feeling of nostalgia born from missing something so much it makes his heart ache. --and he figures it out, in time with rin speaking up again, after pressing kisses to makoto's shoulders and rubbing cream on his back.]

[it's the anticipation of a future, where they'll sit together in the beach in iwatobi, in a beach in australia, and--who knows--to wherever the currents take rin for makoto to follow (perhaps, too, the other way around).]

[makoto turns his head in time to get cream on his chin, startling him momentarily, but smiling within a fraction of a second afterwards.]

My arms. [he says, stretching his out towards his sides] Then yours, and we can get in the water.

[--even if just on the shallow end of it, for makoto]

[but Rin seems nevertheless thrilled -- the thing is, he's always seeing moments like these in terms of the future. he's been that kind of forward-thinker since he was 11]

[after he daubs the spot to Makoto's chin off, sunscreen is applied along his boyfriend's forearms, and if he lingers for a few moments too long along Makoto's biceps, he really shouldn't be blamed. he can't help wanting to touch and tease, with salt in his hair and a full heart (and maybe the ocean is important to them both because it unlocks certain, hidden parts of them -- for Makoto, the part that must be courageous, and for Rin, the part that lives most freely)]

-- There. Do me, do me.

[eagerness tips into impatience, and Rin thrusts the bottle into Makoto's hands as he shuffles forward, scuffing sand all over his own knees and not seeming to notice]

[makoto holds onto it, luckily avoiding the bottle from dropping to the sand. he squirts some onto his hand and is now applying the cold cream onto rin's shoulders, down his arms, and back towards his back.]

This is a lot better than how much it's going to hurt later on if we get a bad sunburn. Remember back in July? Putting shirts on was painful.

[and, besides, he's very careful. as an older brother and now someone else's boyfriend, it's an extra amount of everything that makes makoto protective and catering placed onto another person willing to receive said open affections.]

So, just be a little patient.

[makoto tans, after all, whereas rin isn't as lucky.]

[rin's face gets some sunblock too, and makoto puts the cap back on once he's certain he's done.]

--are you sure you won't want to wear a shirt?

[an older brother, in the end.]

[there's nothing brotherly about Rin's response;]

Why, will you get too distracted if I don't?

[a rakish kind of grin; Makoto should know better. Rin would rather soak up the rays and the surf than try to protect his more easily-burnt skin. consequences were for the person he's had to grow into being, not the person he really is -- he just wants to touch and feel and experience, today]

[he gets to his feet, dusting off his trunks and helping Makoto up. a brief kiss, already salty, and then his hand falls back into Makoto's]

C'mon, let's swim!

[but he's waiting for Makoto to take those first steps, for all his bright excitement]

[makoto's got nothing left at this point, but to smile directly at rin; a small smile--the kind of smile that shows his unease but that cannot hide the excitement that makoto feels regardless. at times like this, it shows why they work so well together--as a couple, a partnership, a team. makoto reminds rin to slow down and take in what he would miss otherwise--good or bad--and rin is what fuels makoto to spur on and be a bit more bold in his actions.]

[it's a good thing, because makoto has had regrets of being too shy or too scared to do things he'd have loved to do before but never did.]

[if he were to cling on to the idea that the ocean is dangerous, and that they don't know what's in it, or if something would happen to them if they get in it and swim, then he would definitely regret it. ocean isn't constant in holly heights, and makoto is definitely sure he has missed it as much as he has missed his family and home.]

[hands holding tight onto rin's, makoto nods.]

Alright, but I doubt you'll-- [he leans in, and presses a kiss to rin's lips] --make it there before me!

[pushes rin to the side--not so hard! just a shove, but enough to perhaps lose his footing on the sand!--and starts running towards the shore, to the blue waters, turning to look back a few times to check that rin is, in fact, coming to catch up with him.]
